Biography

Stephen was born in about 1806 in Albany or Herkimer County, New York.[1][2]

He was the son of Abraham Van Etten and Maria La Roy. He passed away before 1906.[3]

He married Jane. They resided in Onondaga County, New York, between (at least) about 1832 and 1845,[1] before settling in Cohocton in Steuben County, by 1850. The 1850 U.S. Census recorded Stephen Van Etten, age 44 and a farmer, in Cohocton, Steuben County, New York, with Jane, 42; Lovina, 23; Abram, 18, also a farmer; Hiram, 15; Helen, 13; Eliza, 12; John, 9; and Mary, 5. All were born in New York. Hiram, Helen, Eliza, and John had attended school within the past year.[4] The 1855 New York State Census recorded the family in Cohocton. Stephen Vannatton was 48, a farmer, born in Albany County, and his wife Jane Van Natton was 47, county of birth not given (possibly supposed to be Albany). Their children in the household were Abram Van Natton, 23 (28?), and Hiram Van Natten, 24, both farmers; Eliza Van Natton, 16; John Van Natton, 14; and Ann Van Natton, 12, all born in Onondaga County.[1] In 1860, the U.S. census recorded Stephen Vanetten, age 54 and a farmer, with $1000 real estate and $200 personal estate, in Cohocton, with Jane Vanetten, 52; Eliza J. Vanetten, 21; John Vanetten, 18; and Ann Vanetten, 15. All were born in New York. Eliza, John, and Ann had attended school within the year.[5]

His wife Jane appears to have died before 1865, when the New York State Census recorded Stephen Vanatten, age 59, a farmer, in Cohocton, with wife Nancy Vanatten, 41. Both were in their second marriage. Also in the household were Abraham Vanatten, age 35, farmer; Mary A Vanatten, 20,; and John Vanatten, 22; all single. According to the enumeration sheet, Stephen was born in Herkimer County and the others were born in Steuben County.[2]
